Etymology
راهِن is the active participle of the verb رهن, which means to pledge or mortgage something. Its literal sense is 'one who pledges' or 'that which is held in pledge'. Arabic extended this to mean 'bound to the present moment', and from there to the ordinary adjective sense of 'current' or 'present', as in الوضع الراهن, 'the current situation'.
