Etymology
Rahn comes from the Arabic triliteral root r-h-n, which carries the sense of holding something as security. It is the verbal noun of the verb rahana, to pledge or mortgage. The root appears in the Quran, where every soul is described as held in pledge (rahina) for what it has earned. From classical usage in debt and property law, the word passed directly into modern legal and banking Arabic.
