Etymology
عشوائي comes from عَشْواء, the feminine form of أَعْشَى, a person or animal with poor eyesight, especially at dusk. Classical Arabic used the idiom خَبَطَ خَبْطَ عَشْواء, to strike about like a night-blind she-camel that walks without aim. Modern Arabic turned that image into an adjective by adding the nisba suffix ـِيّ, giving a word for anything done without direction or plan.
