Etymology
Fāriq is the active participle of the root f-r-q, a common Semitic root meaning to split or separate. From this same root Arabic gets farq (a parting or difference) and firqa (a splinter group). The word settled into everyday use as a plain noun for a difference, the point where two things stop being the same.
