Etymology

زائِر is the active participle of the verb زَارَ (zāra), 'he visited', built on the triliteral root ز-و-ر. The root's core sense is 'to turn toward or incline', which extended naturally to 'paying a visit'. The same root, curiously, also gave زُور (zūr, 'falsehood'), on the idea of a statement that 'turns aside' from the truth.
