Etymology

تَصَوُّر is the verbal noun of the Form V verb تَصَوَّرَ, built on the triliteral root ص-و-ر (ṣ-w-r), which carries the core sense of shaping, forming, or picturing. The same root gives صورة, meaning image or picture. Form V adds a reflexive, self-directed sense to the root, so تصوّر literally means to form an image in one's own mind, and its noun تصوّر denotes the resulting conception or mental picture.
