Etymology

دَمَوِيّ is built from the Arabic noun دم (dam, blood), one of the oldest Semitic words for the substance. Arabic forms relative adjectives, called nisba adjectives, by adding a suffix that normally sounds like -iyy. Because دم is a short, weak-final root, the suffix takes the longer form -awiyy instead, giving damawiyy, blood-related.
