Etymology
Manjam comes from the Arabic root n-j-m, whose core sense is to emerge, appear, or spring forth. The same root gives najm, meaning star, because a star is something that rises into view. Manjam is a noun of place built on the pattern mafʿal, so it literally names the spot where something emerges from the ground, which came to mean a mine.
