Etymology

Classical Arabic تخم is widely held to be a borrowing from Aramaic, where a related word denoted the outer limit of a territory, including the fixed distance one could walk on the Sabbath. The term entered Arabic through contact between Aramaic-speaking and Arabic-speaking communities in the pre-Islamic and early Islamic periods. From this noun, Arabic later formed the verb تاخم, meaning to border on or be adjacent to, and the adjective متاخم, meaning adjoining.
