Etymology
مَوْثُوق comes from the Arabic root و-ث-ق (w-th-q), which carries the sense of trust and firmness. It is the passive participle of the verb وَثِقَ (to trust, to rely on), so it literally means 'one who is trusted' or 'that which is relied upon'. The root also gives Arabic its words for a document and a covenant, since both are things people rely on as fixed and binding.
