The word comes from the Arabic root kh-s-s (خ ص ص), which carries the sense of being specific or particular to something. The Form V verb takhassasa means to specialize, that is, to make oneself specific to one field. Mutakhassis is the active participle of that verb, so it literally names the person or thing doing the specializing.
