Etymology
The word comes from the Semitic triliteral root م-ت-ع (m-t-ʿ), which carries the sense of enjoying, benefiting, and being provided for. The same root gives متاع, meaning goods or provisions, and the verb تمتّع, to enjoy. مُتْعَة follows the noun pattern fuʿla, marking an abstract state or a single instance of enjoyment.
