Etymology
The word is the passive participle of the form II verb جَرَّدَ, "to strip" or "make bare," from the Semitic root ج-ر-د. From the literal sense of stripping a thing of its concrete cover came the meaning "abstract." The same root gives جَرَاد, the locust, the insect that strips a field bare.
