Etymology
The word comes from the Semitic root د-ق-ق (d-q-q), meaning to be fine, thin, or precise. دَقِيقَة is the feminine of the adjective دَقِيق (fine, minute). The temporal sense developed as a fine, small division of the hour, the same logic behind Latin pars minuta prima that gave English minute.
