Etymology
The word comes from the Form VIII verb ادّعى, which is built on the triliteral root د-ع-و, meaning to call or summon. Form VIII adds a reflexive sense, so the verb means to lay a claim for oneself or to sue. The active participle مُدَّعٍ names the person who makes such a claim, and in legal use it settled on the sense of plaintiff.
