Etymology
The word is the verbal noun of the Form III verb نافَسَ, "to compete for." Its root ن-ف-س carries the sense of "soul, self, breath," and by extension "something precious." To compete, then, is to vie for what is prized. The related adjective نَفيس means "precious" or "valuable."
