مُنافِس is the active participle of the Form III verb نافَسَ, 'to vie with someone.' The underlying root ن ف س also gives نَفْس (self, soul) and نَفِيس (precious), so the verb's core sense is to strive with another over something valuable. A مُنافِس is literally 'one who vies for a precious thing,' which settled into the everyday meaning of competitor or rival.
