Etymology

تردد is the masdar (verbal noun) of the Form V verb تردد, built on the root ر-د-د, which carries the core sense of returning or giving something back. The تفعّل pattern often marks repeated or reflexive action, so تردد literally suggests a repeated returning, a mental back-and-forth. That image gives the word its two main modern senses: wavering between choices, and, by extension in technical usage, a value that recurs cyclically, as in radio frequency.
