Etymology
مُعاناة is the verbal noun of عانى (Form III of the triliteral root ع-ن-ي), meaning to suffer or undergo hardship. The same root, in other verb forms, gives عناء (toil, hardship) and عناية (care, attention), showing how one Arabic root can branch into related but distinct senses. Arabic is a Semitic language, so it has no Indo-European ancestry.
