Etymology

The word entered Arabic in the modern era as a direct borrowing of French classique or English classic, both from Latin classicus, meaning of the highest class of citizens. Latin classicus derives from classis, a levy or division of citizens, originally those summoned to serve in the army or fleet. Arabic attached its native nisba suffix -iyy to the borrowed stem to turn it into a working adjective.
