Etymology

The verb comes from the triliteral Semitic root ح-ل-و, which carries the core sense of sweetness and pleasantness. Classical Arabic uses this root in a stative verb pattern, the same pattern used for verbs describing inherent qualities, such as being noble or being good. From this root Arabic also built the everyday nouns for sweetness and for sweets themselves.
