Etymology

The word is the passive participle of the Form II verb عَيَّن, meaning to designate or appoint. The verb derives from the triliteral root ع-ي-ن, tied to the noun عَيْن, eye and source. The sense moved from fixing the eye on a thing to singling that thing out, hence specific or designated.
