Etymology

مِعْيار comes from the Arabic root ع-ي-ر, the same root behind عيار (ʿiyār), a term long used for the purity grade of a coin or the caliber of a weapon. The مِفْعال (mifʿāl) pattern marks a noun of instrument or means, so مِعْيار originally named the tool used to gauge or check something against a fixed measure. Over time its sense broadened from a physical gauge to an abstract standard or criterion. Arabic is a Semitic language, so no Indo-European root underlies this word.
