Etymology

مليار is a modern coinage, built by analogy with مليون (million), itself borrowed centuries earlier from Italian or French. To name the next order of magnitude, Arabic did not invent a native root but adapted the French word milliard, which is the term French, German, and several other European languages use for 10^9 in place of the English word billion. The result keeps the mil- element common to both mليون and مليار while swapping in an ending that echoes milliard. It entered Arabic through journalism, finance, and translated statistics in the twentieth century.
