Etymology

Mabīʿ comes from the Arabic root b-y-ʿ, the root of the verb bāʿa, meaning to sell. It is the passive participle, so it names the thing acted upon rather than the actor. Because the root has a weak middle letter (yāʾ), the expected pattern mafʿūl contracts to mabīʿ. The word belongs to Arabic's native Semitic stock, with no known Indo-European link.
