Etymology

Najm comes from the Semitic root n-j-m, tied to a verb meaning to appear or to rise. The same root produced the Arabic words for astrology and for the astrologer who read the rising stars. The word also names a chapter of the Quran, Surat an-Najm. In modern speech it extends to a celebrity, a person who shines above the crowd.
