Etymology
The word comes from the Semitic root n-q-b, whose sense is to bore, to pierce, and by extension to inquire into or examine. A naqīb was first the man who looked into the affairs of a group, the appointed inspector or chief. From that came the modern senses: the elected head of a professional guild and the military rank of captain.
