Etymology

Wāqiʿah comes from the Arabic triliteral root w-q-ʕ, whose base verb waqaʿa means "to fall" or "to happen." Wāqiʿah is the feminine active participle of that verb, so it literally names "the thing that occurs." Over time it settled into the everyday sense of an event or incident, and it also serves as the title of the 56th chapter of the Quran, which describes the Day of Judgment as an event that will surely occur. Arabic is a Semitic language, so it has no Indo-European root to trace here.
