Etymology

Yānaṣīb entered Arabic through Ottoman Turkish, where it was built from Turkish yan, meaning side or extra, joined to the Arabic loanword nasīb, meaning share or portion of fate. The compound described an added, chance-based share handed out beyond one's usual lot, a fitting image for a lottery draw. Arabic later borrowed the whole compound back as a single fixed noun for lotteries and raffles.
