Etymology
Waḍʿī is a nisba adjective, formed by adding the relative suffix -ī to the noun waḍʿ, meaning position, situation, or status. Waḍʿ is itself the verbal noun of waḍaʿa, meaning to put or lay down, built on the triliteral root w-ḍ-ʿ. In law and philosophy, waḍʿī came to mean laid down by human authority, hence positive law as opposed to divine or natural law.
