Etymology

Tajawwul is the verbal noun of tajawwala, a Form V verb built on the triliteral Arabic root j-w-l, which carries the sense of going around or circling. Form V adds a ta- prefix and doubles the middle root letter to give the base meaning a reflexive, repeated quality, so tajawwul denotes the ongoing act of moving about rather than a single trip. The root also underlies jawla, a round or tour, and jawwal, mobile or roving.
