Wasīṭ comes from the Semitic root w-s-ṭ, which carries the idea of a middle or center. From this root Arabic also builds wasaṭ, meaning the middle point of something. The fa'īl pattern used here often marks a person or thing characterized by the root idea, so wasīṭ names the one who stands in the middle between two sides. Because the root is Semitic rather than Indo-European, it has no Indo-European ancestor to cite.
