Etymology
رُكْن comes from the Semitic root ر-ك-ن (r-k-n), tied to the verb ركن, meaning to lean on or rest against something for support. The noun form shifted from that physical sense of leaning to the thing leaned on: a corner or supporting pillar. From there it broadened into an abstract sense of an essential, load-bearing part of a system, as in the pillars of a religion or the elements of a legal case.
