Etymology

Fawqa comes from the Arabic triliteral root f-w-q (ف و ق), which carries the core sense of rising above or surpassing. From this root Arabic also derives faaqa (to surpass, excel) and afaaqa (to regain consciousness, literally to come back up). As a Semitic root it has no traceable Indo-European ancestor, so it sits outside the Proto-Indo-European family tree entirely.
