Etymology
Fāqa comes from the triliteral Arabic root f-w-q, the same root behind the preposition fawqa, meaning above or over. As a hollow verb, the middle radical waw contracts to a long alif in the past tense, which gives fāqa its shape. The core sense of standing above something extended naturally into the abstract sense of surpassing or exceeding in quality or degree. This is a native Semitic root, not part of the Indo-European family, so it has no PIE ancestor.
