The word comes from the Semitic root j-l-s, which carries the core sense of sitting. The base verb جَلَسَ (jalasa) means simply to sit. Arabic grammar builds a causative form by adding a prefix أَ- to the root, following the أَفْعَلَ (af'ala) pattern, which turns an intransitive action into one performed on someone else.
