نَفَقَة comes from the Semitic root n-f-q, whose core sense is going out or exiting, and by extension running out or being used up. From this root Arabic also gets نَفَق (a tunnel, a passage that goes through) and أنفق (to spend money, to make it go out). نَفَقَة names the thing that goes out of a person's hand or purse: an expense or a required payment. The root is Semitic, not Indo-European, so it has no PIE ancestor.
