Etymology
Tafāwuḍ comes from the Semitic root f-w-ḍ (ف-و-ض), which carries the sense of handing over or entrusting authority to someone else. Classical Arabic already used the base verb fawwaḍa for delegating a decision to another party. The Form VI pattern tafāʿul adds a reciprocal meaning, so tafāwuḍ literally points to two sides handing authority back and forth until they settle a matter together. Arabic is a Semitic language, so it has no Indo-European root or cognates.
