Etymology

جرام is a modern loanword, taken into Arabic from French "gramme" (or English "gram") when the metric system spread in the 19th and 20th centuries. The French word goes back to Late Latin "gramma", from Greek "grámma", which originally meant a written letter or small mark and came to denote a small unit of weight in late antiquity. Arabic simply adapted the sound of the borrowed word rather than building it from a native triliteral root.
