Etymology
The word comes from the noun خَيال (khayāl), which originally meant shadow or phantom, and later came to mean imagination or fancy. The suffix ـِيّ is the nisba ending, which turns a noun into a descriptive adjective meaning "of or relating to" that noun. So خَيالِيّ literally means "of imagination," and by extension, imaginary or fictional.
