Etymology

حَوَى belongs to the Semitic root ح-و-ي, a defective triliteral root ending in a weak radical. Classical dictionaries such as Lisan al-Arab give its core sense as gathering something within a bounded space or taking full possession of it. From this root Arabic also derives احتوى, meaning to contain or include, and حاوية, a word for a container or tank. The verb is Semitic in origin, not Indo-European, so no Proto-Indo-European root applies.
