مُماثِل is the active participle of the Form III verb مَاثَلَ (māthala), meaning to resemble or correspond to something. Both trace to the Semitic root m-th-l, whose core sense is likeness or resemblance, the same root behind مَثَل (mathal, proverb or example). Form III verbs in Arabic typically express a reciprocal or directed action, so māthala means to be like, to correspond to, and mumāthil names the one doing that resembling.
