Etymology
The root ر-و-د carries the sense of going about in search of something, as in راد, to roam looking for pasture, and رائد, a scout who goes ahead of the group. The Form III verb راوَد takes that searching motion and turns it toward a person: to circle around someone, making repeated attempts to win them over or turn them from their resolve. The related Form IV أراد narrowed over time to a simpler sense, to want, and its verbal noun إرادة means will.
