Etymology
The word comes from the Arabic triliteral root ر-ه-ب (r-h-b), which carries the sense of fear, dread, or awe. The Form IV verb أرهب (arhaba) means to terrify or intimidate, and its verbal noun إرهاب (irhāb) means terrorism. Adding the nisba suffix -iyy, which works much like English -ist or -ic, produces إرهابي (irhābiyy), meaning terrorist or terroristic. The word entered heavy political and media use in the twentieth century as Arabic developed modern vocabulary for terrorism.
