Etymology
The verb comes from the Semitic root ج-و-د (j-w-d), which carries the sense of goodness and excellence. أَجاد is the Form IV (causative) pattern of this root, and the middle radical و contracts into a long ا in this hollow-root conjugation. The same root gives Arabic its everyday word for 'good,' جَيِّد. Because Arabic descends from the Semitic family rather than Indo-European, it has no Proto-Indo-European root or true Indo-European cognates.
