صودا is a modern loanword, taken directly from the European term soda (English, French, and Italian all use the same form). Arabic borrowed it in the last two centuries alongside other chemical and consumer terms that arrived with modern trade and industry. The origin of the European word itself is disputed. One theory links it to a Latin or Italian term for a soda-ash plant, and some scholars propose a distant Arabic root behind that plant name, but this chain is not firmly established, so no solid root can be given here.
