Etymology

Musharrif comes from the triliteral Semitic root sh-r-f, which carries the sense of height, nobility, and honor. The verb sharrafa (Form II, with a doubled middle radical) means to honor or dignify something, and musharrif is its active participle: the thing or act that confers honor. Arabic has no Indo-European ancestry, so there is no PIE root to trace.
