Etymology
The verb comes from the Semitic triliteral root ق ذ ف (q-dh-f), whose core sense is a forceful throwing or casting motion. Classical Arabic dictionaries already record both the physical sense, to hurl a stone or a projectile, and the extended legal sense, to hurl an accusation of unchastity at someone. The same root gives Arabic its word for a guided missile or artillery shell, and it survives in the surname al-Qadhafi, literally the thrower.
