Etymology

The word comes from the Semitic root و-ظ-ف (w-ẓ-f), which carries the idea of assigning a fixed task or post. The Form II verb وَظَّفَ means to appoint someone to a post or to employ them. تَوْظِيف is the verbal noun of that verb, built on the تَفْعِيل pattern typical of Form II maṣdars. Arabic is a Semitic language, not Indo-European, so it has no Proto-Indo-European root or cognates.
