Etymology

Awsat is the elative form of the triliteral Semitic root w-s-t, whose core sense is 'middle' or 'center.' The base noun wasat means the middle or waist of something, and the elative pattern turns it into 'more central' or 'most central.' This is the same word behind phrases like al-sharq al-awsat, the Middle East, and awasit al-shahr, the middle of the month. As Arabic is a Semitic language, it has no Indo-European root.
